multi point perspective
just realised if i am to illustrate and animate properly i need to understand perspective. i usually just draw a line across the middle of the page and then do diagonal lines going from the centre. here some links on multi point perspective:

cowgirl paint tutorial
here is a tute for digital painting that uses a technique similar to my own but goes many steps further. cowgirl part 1 part 2 part 3.
it starts with ruff sketch scanned, printed out and redrawn a few times till line is tight without losing the freeness of character.
colours are blocked out in back middle and fore ground layers and worked on it that order.
use of complementary colours is well understood by artist.
photoshop techniques are used such as blur, lasso as well as blending layers.
achieves efficiently what it sets out to do: a scketch that looks like it came out of an animation.

mirrored tension
just noticed while watching a clip for oscar nominated animated short: "Even Pigeons go to Heaven"
that a popular technique to create more tension in a scene is to splice two events together and mirror the escalating tension. in pigeons, the two events are: a car chase and an old man trying to get a jar of something on the top of a cupboard. as the pursuing car gets closer to its target, the old man is closer to the jar. the tenuous nature of the old mans footing on the stack of books on the chair paralleled with the recklessness of the car chase gives a sense that the two events are about to crash together in one cataclysmic instant.
